06

Raku Firing

The process begins with firing the piece at 1000 degrees, removing it from the kiln while it's still red hot. It’s then placed in a material like sawdust or cardboard and sealed for 10 minutes, allowing the glaze to crackle and the smoke to permeate the clay. After this, the piece is plunged into cold water before cleaning using a wire brush. Finally, a polish with beeswax to achieve a beautiful finish.

I had the pleasure of doing a one-to-one workshop as a birthday present with Jules recently. Being a complete novice myself, her attention to detail and knowledge was amazing taking me through all the stages, I felt like I learned a lot in a short space of time and it was all done with fun and laughter. Seeing my creation come to life was well worth it. I didn’t know I could be that creative!!!
